Methuselah becomes a father at 187:
"And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech."GENESIS 5:25 · KJV
That son, Lamech, lives a full life of his own, then the chapter's own refrain closes it:
"And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died."GENESIS 5:31 · KJV
Methuselah's own total, stated outright, is longer still:
"And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died."GENESIS 5:27 · KJV

Add it up: 187 plus 777 puts Lamech's own death in year 964 of Methuselah's life.
But Methuselah's own total is 969. Subtract 964 from 969, and Methuselah lived five more years after his son was gone.
