The Claim, Straight

Two books of the Bible give two different ages for the same king taking the same throne. Neither number was ever quietly reprinted to match the other.

Both still sit in your Bible today, exactly as first written - a real Bible contradiction, hiding in plain sight.

What the Text Says

TEXT2 KINGS 8:26

Ahaziah is a king of Judah, and Kings records his age the moment he takes the throne:

"Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign."2 KINGS 8:26 · KJV
TEXT2 CHRONICLES 22:2

Same king, same event, a different book - and a different number for the exact same moment:

"Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign."2 CHRONICLES 22:2 · KJV

The Turn

COMPUTED2 CHRONICLES 21:20 · THE INTERNAL CHECK

Ahaziah's father, Jehoram, "began to reign" at "thirty and two years old" and "reigned in Jerusalem eight years" (2 Chronicles 21:20) - so Jehoram died at 40.

A 42-year-old Ahaziah would be two years older than his own father ever lived. That arithmetic is why most readers favor the 22 in Kings, even though both numbers still print as written.

Both numbers, still there - the copyists kept the difference, not erased it.

The Fine Print

CAVEATThis is a real, well-documented numerical variant between the two books' accounts, not a hidden error found for the first time here.

CAVEATBoth numbers appear in the KJV text exactly as printed, unaltered by this show. This page is not choosing which number is right - it is counting what both texts actually say.

CAVEATKings and Chronicles retell overlapping history with their own small wording and number differences elsewhere too - the parent episode's own "exact middle verse" beat runs into the same pattern at 2 Chronicles 18:30 against 1 Kings 22:31. This is one instance of a known pattern, not an isolated glitch.

CAVEATThis page is not arguing the Bible is untrustworthy because of the difference - it's showing what "kept, not fixed" honesty actually looks like on the page.

Questions People Ask

How old was King Ahaziah when he became king?

TEXTThe Bible gives two different answers. 2 Kings 8:26 says twenty-two; 2 Chronicles 22:2 says forty-two - the same king, the same event, two numbers, both still printed exactly as written.

Is the Ahaziah age difference a real Bible contradiction?

COMPUTEDYes - a real, well-documented numerical variant between Kings and Chronicles, not a hidden error. Forty-two would also make Ahaziah two years older than his own father, Jehoram, ever lived (2 Chronicles 21:20), which is why most readers favor twenty-two as the likelier number.

Did copyists ever fix the Ahaziah contradiction?

TEXTNo - both numbers still stand, side by side, in your Bible today. The copyists who preserved these texts kept the mismatch rather than quietly reprinting one book to agree with the other.
